Biological Sciences Major, BS – The Biology of Global Health Concentration (GloHeal)

Requirements for All Biology Majors

All Biology majors at UTK, whether continuing, returning, and transfer students must meet a progression of requirements before declaring a major in Biological Sciences:

Requirements: students must have an overall GPA of 2.0, be in good academic standing and have completed CHEM 122 *-CHEM 123 * and CHEM 132 *-CHEM 133 * and BIOL 150 * or BIOL 158  with a minimum grade of C.

Prerequisites:

• A minimum grade of C must be earned in all prerequisites

All Majors Must Complete:

• BIOL 150 - Organismal and Ecological Biology 3 Credit Hours *
• BIOL 159 - Skills of Biological Investigation 2 Credit Hours *
• BIOL 160 - Cellular and Molecular Biology 3 Credit Hours *
• CHEM 122 - General Chemistry I 3 Credit Hours *
• CHEM 123 - General Chemistry I Laboratory 1 Credit Hours *
• CHEM 132 - General Chemistry II 3 Credit Hours *
• CHEM 133 - General Chemistry II Laboratory 1 Credit Hours *
• PHYS 221 - Elements of Physics I 4 Credit Hours *
• PUBH 201 - Introduction to Public Health 3 Credit Hours *
• PUBH 202 - Introductory Epidemiology 3 Credit Hours

Select one sequence:

• MATH 132 - Calculus 1B Infused with Precalculus 3 Credit Hours *
• MATH 142 - Calculus II 4 Credit Hours *

And Select:

• BIOL 240 - General Genetics 4 Credit Hours

• Or

• BIOL 220 - General Microbiology 3 Credit Hours and
• BIOL 229 - General Microbiology Laboratory 2 Credit Hours

• Or

• BIOL 260 - Ecology 2 Credit Hours and
• BIOL 269 - Ecology Field-Based Laboratory 2 Credit Hours

• Or

• BIOL 280 - Evolution 3 Credit Hours and
• BIOL 281 - Evolution Discussion 1 Credit Hours

The Biology of Global Health (GloHeal)

concentration consists of 32 additional hours.

At least 18 credit hours of these 32 credit hours must be taken from BCMB, EEB or Micro courses within the six topic lists.

Complete 1 course from each of the following six topic lists:

The remaining 14 hours can come from any of the lists above or one of the following courses:

• BCMB 452 - Independent Research in Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology 1-3 Credit Hours * (max of 3 hours may be applied to major)
• BIOL 211 - Eukaryotic Cell Biology 2 Credit Hours
• EEB 400 - Undergraduate Research 1-2 Credit Hours (max of 3 hours may be applied to major)
• MICR 401 - Undergraduate Research in Microbiology 3 Credit Hours (max of 3 hours may be applied to major)
• Other research to be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Biology of Global Health Concentration – Honors Option

• Minimum 3.5 GPA in Global Health Concentration courses
• Minimum 3.25 GPA at UTK (University-level requirement for an honors degree)
• Participate in 3 hours of independent research (BCMB 452 *, EEB 400 , or MICR 401 )
• Complete 12 hours of upper division (300-400 level) honors by contract. BCMB 452 *, EEB 400 , or MICR 401  cannot count towards honors by contract hours.
