Center for Global Engagement

Gretchen Neisler

The principal role of the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) at the University of Tennessee is to lead, coordinate, and support the university’s strategies for global education, research, and engagement. A lynchpin in the university’s globalization agenda, responsibilities of CGE include developing and managing international partnerships, welcoming and assisting international students and scholars, providing study abroad opportunities for our students, and creating international and inter-cultural programming for the campus and broader community.

Study, Teach, Work, and Research Abroad

Growing numbers of UT students are going abroad for study, service, and research with scholarship support. Professors from every college are engaged in teaching and research abroad. Every year, UT students, staff, and professors are selected for prestigious awards including the Fulbright program.

UT’s International Community

Increasing numbers of international students and scholars are attracted to UT: short-term exchange students as well as bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree applicants. Our English Language Institute welcomes students for short or longer term intensive English language learning. Our strong connection to our international graduates continues through our Office of Alumni Affairs.

On-campus Involvement

To support its Ready for the World initiative, UT offers a wide range of internationally oriented activities. The International House along with the Confucius Institute, student organizations, and many other units provide outstanding cultural programs for the campus and wider community.

International Partnerships

UT is connected to leading institutions around the world through academic and research partnerships. Our collaboration includes student exchanges, joint research projects, dual-degree programs, and jointly sponsored institutes.

CGE is organized into six major units: Confucius Institute, English Language Institute, International House, International Students and Scholar Services, Office of the Peace Corps, and Programs Abroad Office.

PEACE CORPS PREP PROGRAM

The Peace Corps Prep program at the University of Tennessee is open to all undergraduate UT students regardless of major, provided they meet the admissions requirements for the program. Students in the program prepare for international experiences by completing a set of courses and activities designed to develop their professional and leadership skills. These courses may be used to satisfy requirements or electives in many UT majors and minors. The program is designed to prepare students to be strong candidates for the U. S. Peace Corps program following completion of their undergraduate degrees. The program includes training/experience for specific sectors: Education, Health, Environment, Agriculture, Youth in Development, and Community Economic Development.  Students should apply for admission to the program as early as possible and no later than one year before they expect to complete their UT undergraduate degree. The U.S. Peace Corps will issue a certificate to students who successfully complete the Peace Corps Prep program requirements. For more information, please visit the Peace Corps page of Center for International Education website or contact the Peace Corps Prep Program Coordinator.
