Builds on standard BS chemical engineering education to provide deeper knowledge of fundamental chemical engineering concepts and additional focus on theoretical understanding. Appropriate for students interested in careers in process engineering industries and related fields. In addition, students enrolled in the PhD program may earn a concurrent MS degree while enrolled.

Admissions Standards/Procedures
- Graduate Record Examination scores and at least three letters of reference are required for admission.
Thesis Option
Appropriate for students seeking deeper expertise in a subdiscipline of chemical and biomolecular engineering via completion of a thesis research project.
Credit Hours Required
Minimum 30 graduate credit hours
Required Courses
- A total of at least 21 credit hours in graduate-level courses (excluding CBE 500 ) in chemical and biomolecular engineering and related areas beyond the baccalaureate.
- Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering core: CBE 506 , CBE 531 , CBE 547 , CBE 551 , and CBE 579 (15 credit hours)
- 1-6 credit hours of technical elective course work beyond the core courses is determined in consultation with the student’s advisor and/or thesis committee. Examples include courses from CBE, ME, BME, MSE, NE, CS, ENVR, CHEM, MATH, PHYS, BCMB, MICR, ESE. This course work may include CBE 501 listed below.
- CBE 501 (1-6 credit hours); resident students must register every semester it is offered.
- CBE 500 (9 credit hours)
Non-Course Requirements
- A final oral defense of the thesis.

Appropriate for students wishing to acquire broad knowledge of chemical and biomolecular engineering topics via extended elective course work.

- An additional 6-11 credit hours of technical elective courses (examples include courses from CBE, ME, BME, MSE, NE, CS, ENVR, CHEM, MATH, PHYS, BCMB, MICR, ESE) selected in consultation with the student’s advisor and/or committee. Up to 6 credit hours of CBE 501 may count toward these elective courses.
