HIST 384 - History of Jewish Civilization II

3 Credit Hours
Medieval-present. The resiliency of Jewish civilization in the face of external pressures. Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jewry in medieval Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Jewish mysticism. Judaism’s encounter with modernity. Hasidism and the Haskala. The Reform movement and Zionism, the Holocaust, and the foundation of the State of Israel. Assimilation and the future of Judaism. Writing-emphasis course.
