The Education major, BS in Education – Elementary Education/ Special Education Interventionist K-8 Dual Concentration, Undergraduate Internship Program is designed for students seeking Elementary Education teacher licensure with a Special Education Interventionist dual endorsement. This distance education program primarily focuses on elementary education preparation while incorporating strategic special education coursework that enables graduates to also obtain the interventionist license. Graduates will be prepared to teach in elementary settings with enhanced skills to support diverse learners and will be eligible for Tennessee teacher licensure in Elementary Education with the Special Education Interventionist dual endorsement.
Admission Requirements
Students desiring entry into this program must meet admission requirements including, but not limited to the following:
- Academic achievement - minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
- 24 credit hours completed
- Tennessee state law (TCA 49-5-5610) requires that students wishing to enter an approved higher education educator preparation program must submit to a criminal history background check. Admission to the program is dependent on clearance of any conviction(s) as referenced to a list of crimes that would prohibit a person from being licensed in Tennessee.
Progression Requirements
Progression to Interventionist Special Education specialization requires a 2.75 cumulative GPA after a minimum of 24 semester hours of coursework. Once candidates formally progress to the specialization, they must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 while in the program. Students must earn a grade of C or better in all teacher education courses. Students with less than a 2.75 GPA for two consecutive semesters will be dropped from the program. Students who fail to meet the standards for professional conduct during the course of their fieldwork will not be retained in the major.

Universal Tracking (uTrack) is an academic monitoring system designed to help students stay on track for timely graduation. In order to remain on track, students must complete the minimum requirements for each tracking semester, known as milestones. Milestones include successful completion of specified courses and/or attainment of a minimum GPA. uTrack requirements only affect full-time, degree-seeking students. Program Notes
- Students must complete all field experiences and student teaching requirements
- Students must pass all required Praxis examinations for licensure
- Students should work with advisors to develop 2-year, 3-year, and 4-year completion plans as needed
Licensure Requirements
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be eligible to apply for Tennessee teacher licensure in Elementary Education (K-5) as their initial licensure. Students will also be eligible for the Special Education Interventionist (K-8) add-on endorsement. Students must pass required Praxis examinations for Elementary Education and Special Education and meet all state licensure requirements. |
