University Honors is a scholarly community comprised of accomplished, action-oriented, high-potential students representing a wide range of academic disciplines, as well as the dedicated Honors faculty and staff who challenge and support them. The curriculum focuses on interdisciplinary breadth, innovative complex problem-solving, and leadership to complement the depth of learning provided in students’ academic disciplines. University Honors creates and nurtures a community of students eager to learn, lead, and make a positive difference on campus, in Tennessee, and beyond.

University Honors offers two programs: the Chancellor’s Honors Program and Haslam Leadership Scholars. Each program has its own eligibility requirements, program goals, and academic curriculum (see Academic Program links below).

University Honors students are encouraged to participate in one or more of the University of Tennessee’s many specialized departmental honors concentrations or college honor programs. They are also encouraged and supported to deepen their honors experience by participating fully in campus life, serving the community, and pursuing experiential learning opportunities, such as internships, research, service learning, and global experiences.

Eligibility and Admission

Chancellor’s Honors: First-year applicants with superior academic and extracurricular credentials are invited to apply to the Chancellor’s Honors Program. Qualified transfer students with less than or equal to one year of credit can apply for membership. Transfer students with more than one year of academic credit are encouraged to enroll in departmental honors concentrations or college honor programs.

Haslam Leadership Scholars: Only first-year applicants are eligible to apply to Haslam Leadership Scholars. Highly accomplished students with a demonstrated commitment to leadership, service, and civic engagement who aspire to leverage their leadership to enrich the lives of people and communities across Tennessee and beyond are strongly encouraged to apply.

Prospective first-year applicants must apply to the University of Tennessee by the early action deadline (typically November 1st) and to University Honors by approximately November 20th. Transfer students must apply to University Honors by July 1st.

Currently, distance education students are not eligible for the University Honors program.

For precise dates and more information about admissions, please access: https://studentsuccess.utk.edu/honors/how-to-apply/

University Honors students are expected to make timely progress toward honors graduation while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students not meeting expectations must complete supplemental academic coaching with University Honors coaches.

Benefits

Students in the University Honors enjoy scholarships and various privileges designed to facilitate their growth, engagement, and achievement. They are granted priority registration, advanced library privileges, and specialized honors coaching to ensure access to the coursework and resources an ambitious curriculum demands. University Honors students can access exclusive study spaces, engagement opportunities, graduate and professional school preparation, competitive honors grants, and residence in the University Honors Living and Learning Community.
