The Computational Social Science Certificate provides students with essential skills at the intersection of data, technology, and society. Through coursework in computational tools, data visualization, analytical thinking, and applied analysis, students learn to conceptualize societal challenges in computational terms, analyze social and behavioral data for diverse audiences. As a shorter, focused version of the Computational Social Science minor, the certificate equips students with practical, interdisciplinary skills applicable to business, healthcare, public policy, social media, and service sectors.

Undergraduate Certificate Type: Add-On
Credit Hours Required
The Computational Social Sciences Undergraduate Certificate consists of a minimum of 12 hours, 9 of which are completed at the upper division level (300 or above). Courses for the certificate must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Depending upon a student’s undergraduate program of study, prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this certificate. Admissions Standards/Procedures
Applicants to the Computational Social Science (CSS) undergraduate certificate program must submit a letter of application to the director(s) of the Computational Social Science program. The CSS certificate is intended as additional study for undergraduate students who are concurrently enrolled in another discipline at the University of Tennessee. CSS Core (3 Credit Hours)
Complete: Foundational and Conceptual Requirements (3 Credit Hours)
Complete: Skills-Based Methods Requirements (6 Credit Hours)
Choose two to three courses for six credit hours chosen from the computational research methods and skill-based courses below. Note:
