Industrial Engineering Major, Doctor of Engineering (DEng)

The Industrial Engineering Major for the Doctorate of Engineering (DEng) degree for the Engineering Management concentration is designed for graduates of accredited master programs in engineering or similar discipline with industrial experience in an appropriate engineering or applied science position. The doctoral program is mainly for working professionals who can complete the program in three to four years while working fulltime. The program could be completed 100% online with both synchronous and asynchronous options.

Admission to the Industrial Engineering Major for the Doctor of Engineering (DEng) degree requires a master’s degree in engineering management, industrial engineering, or closely related field, and previous academic performance that clearly demonstrates the capacity to do technical investigative work with potential for an engineering leadership career. The admission also requires a minimum of 3.30 GPA from an earned master’s degree and a minimum of 2.70 GPA from an earned bachelor’s degree, preferably in science or technology.
Academic Standards
Students will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.
Credit Hours
This doctoral program requires a total of 72 graduate credit hours. As we require a masters coming in, this results in 48 post masters credit hours. This is broken down into the following requirements:
Transfer from masters: 24 credit hours
Required Classes: 21 credit hours
Elective Classes: 9 credit hours
Capstone Hours: 18 credit hours
Elective Courses
Three elective graduate courses (3 credit hours each) for a total of 9 credit hours. Must be 500-level IE courses.
Capstone
A significant project, or capstone, consisting of a body of applied and practical methods/products with the main goal of solving complex industrial problems.
Doctoral Committee
A well-formed committee for the DEng degree must have at least three committee members.
• Two members (including the Chair) must be doctorally-prepared faculty members with a tenure track or tenured appointment in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at UTK.
• One member must be a doctorally-prepared faculty member with an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or above in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering or other department at UTK.
