Medical Physics Graduate Certificate


The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers a graduate certificate in Medical Physics (MP). The Graduate Certificate in Medical Physics is designed for students who have earned a PhD in a related field and who would like to become certified Medical Physicists and/or conduct research in Medical Physics.

Add-On (earned doctoral degree required). Apply to the add-on certificate prior to completing six graduate credit hours towards the certificate requirements.

Stand-Alone (earned doctoral degree required)

Admissions Standards/Procedures


  • Applicants must have earned a PhD in an appropriate field such as Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or other closely related science or engineering discipline.
  • All entering students shall have a strong foundation in basic physics demonstrated either by an undergraduate or graduate degree in physics, or by a degree in an engineering discipline or another of the physical sciences and with coursework that is the equivalent of a minor in physics (i.e., one that includes at least three upper-level undergraduate physics courses that would be required for a physics major).
  • Apply for the certificate by submitting the online application through the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Credit Hours Required


15 graduate credit hours

9 undergraduate credit hours (cannot be taken for graduate credit and will not count toward the required 15 graduate credit hours)

To receive the certificate, students must:

  1. complete the Graduate Certificate Course Verification Form and
  2. through MyUTK, apply to graduate from the certificate program.
