American Civics Minor


The Institute of American Civics, located within the Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs, offers a minor in American Civics that is open to students pursuing any major. The minor is intended to promote understanding of American institutions and American political thought, as well as the need for civic engagement and civil discourse in the public life of American constitutional democracy

Admission is competitive and will be based on student applications that demonstrate academic aptitude, interest in public policy and engagement outside the classroom. An admissions committee will make selections based on overall student promise and the potential for synergies across students in the cohort. Further information on the admission process and timetable are available on the Baker School website (http://bakerschool.utk.edu).

Admission Standards and Procedures


The American Civics minor includes 3 credit hours of prerequisite courses from the  (IAC 101 ), 15 credit hours of required courses (IAC 102 , IAC 201 , IAC 412 , and two upper division IAC 3 credit courses, selected by the student). Other courses to complete the minor may be accepted upon approval by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Students must complete all courses with a 2.5 GPA or higher for the American Civics minor. For students planning on advanced study a 3.0 GPA or higher is recommended. For students pursuing the 4+1 option with the Masters of Public Administration (MPA) or Masters of Public Policy (MPP) a 3.4 GPA or higher is required.
