Engineering Science Major, MS


Master of Science with a major in engineering science is offered through an interdepartmental program. The program is intended only for students whose research is best supported by a collection of courses that is interdisciplinary and so would not meet course requirements for any other major.

Admissions Standards/Procedures

  • As part of the application process, the applicant must choose one of the concentrations listed above.
  • The student’s departmental home is that of the chosen concentration and of the student’s major professor.

Credit Hours Required

Minimum 30 graduate credit hours

Required Courses

  • Option Requirement
  • Engineering courses taken in the area of their concentration (12 or 15 credit hours)
    • Thesis Option: 12 credit hours minimum
      • May include, but is not restricted to, courses offered by the primary discipline of Aerospace Engineering (AE), Aviation Systems (AVSY), Biomedical Engineering (BME), Civil Engineering (CE), Environmental Engineering (ENVE), or Mechanical Engineering (ME).
    • Course Only with Comprehensive Exam Option: 15 credit hours minimum
    • May include, but is not restricted to, courses offered by the primary discipline of Aerospace Engineering (AE), Aviation Systems (AVSY), Biomedical Engineering (BME), Civil Engineering (CE), Environmental Engineering (ENVE), or Mechanical Engineering (ME).
  • Mathematics (6 credit hours minimum)
    • MATH 400-level or above
    • Other 500-level engineering courses that are approved by the student’s advisory committee and the home department’s Director of Graduate Studies may be substituted for the mathematics courses.
  • Related Courses
    • Thesis Option: 6 credit hours
    • Course Only with Comprehensive Exam: 3 credit hours
    • For either option these related courses are selected from

      • the physical and life sciences
      • Chemistry (CHEM),

    • Or other courses selected in consultation with the major professor and/or guidance committee.

Additional Course Requirements

  • At least two-thirds of the above minimum required credit hours must be taken in courses numbered at or above the 500 level.

Non-Course Requirements

  • Thesis Option: A final oral examination covering the thesis and related course work.
  • Course Only with Comprehensive Exam Option: A final written examination covering the course work
