SCHP 530 - History and Systems of Psychology and Education3 Credit Hours Explores the history of modern psychology, primarily in America, since 1879. It includes an exploration of the history of the care of America’s mentally ill and examines the evolution of mental asylums and the growth of American psychiatry. The philosophical and physiological viewpoints that led to the birth of the “new” psychology in Germany and ultimately to the major systems (or schools) of psychology in America, namely structuralism, functionalism, behaviorism, and psychoanalysis, are also explored. The science and practice of psychology evolved together in America and thus this course will focus not only on the history of the science of psychology but also on the profession of psychology.
