    Survey of the archaeology and art of Greece and the Greek-speaking areas from the Orientalizing through Hellenistic periods (c. 700―30 BCE).     Survey of the archaeology of Italy and the Roman World from prehistoric times to the fall of the Roman Empire (1000 BCE―476 CE). Highlights are the rise and decline of Etruscan culture; the development of Roman architecture, art, and urban planning; art and architecture used for political propaganda; and Roman cosmopolitan culture during the Empire.     Survey of seafaring in the Mediterranean and northern Europe from its very beginning, c. 11,000 BCE, until the late Middle Ages. Discussion of shipwrecks, iconographic evidence, and texts. Emphasis on ship construction and the evidence it provides about seafaring, naval warfare, technology, the exploitation of natural resources, levels of labor, social differences in society, and changes in the economy.
