Philosophy Major, BA - Honors Concentration

The Philosophy Honors Concentration offers highly motivated students the opportunity to pursue advanced study and research in philosophy. In addition to completing the requirements of the major, students take enriched coursework and write an honors thesis under faculty supervision. The program emphasizes independent research, critical analysis, and scholarly writing, preparing students for graduate study in philosophy and related fields as well as for careers that demand intellectual rigor, creativity, and clarity of thought.

Concentration Requirements
The honors concentration requires a 3.25 overall GPA with a 3.5 GPA in philosophy coursework. It consists of 31 hours of courses numbered. Two honors philosophy courses, two honors or honors-by-contract philosophy courses, and additionally, one hour of PHIL 407 with a grade of B or better are required. Apart from the one required hour of PHIL 407 , at least 6 hours must be taken at the 400-level or above. I. Complete:(3 Credit Hours)
II. Select one course from each area (at least two honors courses):
A. Ancient Philosophy (3 Credit Hours)
B. Modern Philosophy (3 Credit Hours)
C. Ethics (3 Credit Hours)
D. Epistemology, Metaphysics, Logic (3 Credit Hours)
III. Select five additional Philosophy courses: (15 Credit Hours)
- Only 3 hours of philosophy electives may be taken at the 100 or 200-level.
IV. Complete one hour
- Must receive a grade of B or better.
- No more than 1 hour may be applied toward the major.
V. Proficiencies
Students are required to complete a 0-credit course, typically at the end of the student’s degree program. |
