Philosophy Major, BA

The Philosophy major provides students with a rigorous education in critical thinking, analysis, and clear communication. Students engage with fundamental questions about knowledge, ethics, science, medicine, and the human condition while studying both historical and contemporary philosophical traditions. The major cultivates intellectual breadth, reasoning skills, and interpretive depth that serve as excellent preparation for graduate study in philosophy and related fields, as well as for careers in law, medicine, public policy, business, and beyond.

Major Requirements
The major consists of 30 hours of courses. At least 6 hours must be taken at the 400-level or above; PHIL 407 may not be used to satisfy this 6-hour requirement. I. Complete: (3 Credit Hours)
II. Select one course from each area:
A. Ancient Philosophy (3 Credit Hours)
B. Modern Philosophy (3 Credit Hours)
C. Ethics (3 Credit Hours)
D. Epistemology, Metaphysics, Logic (3 Credit Hours)
III. Select five additional Philosophy courses: (15 Credit Hours)
- Only 3 hours of Philosophy electives may be taken at the 100 or 200-level.
IV. Proficiencies
Students are required to complete a 0-credit course, typically at the end of the student’s degree program. |
