The honors concentration consists of 30 hours of Spanish courses numbered above 300. Students must have at least 12 hours of honors courses in Spanish at the 400-level, including honors-by-contract and/or independent studies with an honors-by-contract component. In order for an honors-by-contract course to fulfill the honors requirement, students should receive a final grade of B+ or better.
At least 3 hours of one of the following must be completed: a) a study abroad experience in a Spanish-speaking country or b) a Spanish-related service learning class (e.g., SPAN 494 taken as an independent study). These hours may not be used to fulfill the 12-hour honors requirement.
Overall GPA of at least 3.25 and a 3.5 GPA in Spanish courses are required for both admission into and completion of the honors concentration.
It is strongly recommended that majors take SPAN 312 * or SPAN 309 * at the University of Tennessee prior to studying abroad. A maximum of 15 credit hours taken abroad may be counted towards the major. These requirements do not apply to UT faculty-led summer programs. Students whose level of proficiency in Spanish is superior as defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines may substitute a 400-level course for SPAN 312 * with consent of the department. SPAN 311 * and SPAN 312 * are not available to native Spanish speakers or Spanish/English bilinguals, who should instead take SPAN 309 * and an additional 300/400-level course with consent of the department. SPAN 311 * may not be taken after completion of SPAN 312 *.
