Leadership Studies Minor

Program Description:  

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, through its Leadership Studies minor, offers a 12-credit hour curriculum of applied leadership learning and development within the collegiate setting to prepare students to be career ready and civic-minded graduates. This minor is open to students of every major and designed to enhance the undergraduate educational experience. The curriculum has an experiential approach to leadership learning and development. Students will have structured opportunities to combine contemporary leadership studies theory with coached leadership experiences. Leadership learning and development will accumulate throughout the completion of the minor and demonstrate the necessary leadership identity, efficacy, and capacity to exercise leadership in collegiate, civic, and career contexts.  

Admission  

Students can declare the Leadership Studies minor at any time by completing the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS) Minor Add/Drop form. The CEHHS Minor Add/Drop Form can be found here: https://cehhsadvising.utk.edu/advising-resourcesforms/

Leadership Studies Minor Requirements:


The minor requires 12 credit hours of coursework.

Students must complete:

a) Phase 1 and 2 - nine hours of core requirements;

b) Phase 3 - three hours of electives to be selected from the provided list of approved electives; and

c) Phase 4 -  co-curricular requirements. Phase 4/LEAD 499  requirements must be met prior to graduation.

Phase 1 - Introduction to Leadership Studies, Learning, & Practice


Students must complete at least 6 credits in Phase 1.

a) LEAD 201 (3 Credits);

b) LEAD 349 (2 Credits) with LEAD 350 (1 Credit) - (Co-requisite)

Note: Once a student has completed the initial co-requisite sequence of 2-credits of LEAD 349 and 1-credit of 350, LEAD 350 can be repeated an additional 3 times throughout Phases 1, 2, 3 and 4 for a total of 4 times (4 Credits). 1-credit per semester is suggested.  

Phase 2 - Leadership and Change Processes


Students must complete 3 credits of LEAD 352 (3 Credits) in Phase 2. 

Phase 4 - Experiential Leadership Proficiency


Students must complete the co-curricular requiriments in Phase 4. 

  • Students will choose to complete either a Leadership Development Portfolio OR Leadership Development Overlay of Capstone Experience from Academic Major
  • Instructions will be provided in the Canvas page associated with LEAD 499.
