Arts, Culture, Society, and Politics of Latin America and the Caribbean offers students a broadly interdisciplinary exploration of the region which also includes Latinx communities in the US. This concentration is designed for those students interested in a more traditional liberal arts education that is based in the study of the arts, culture, political systems and societal issues of the region, and the ways in which they are intricately interconnected and constantly changing and intermingling with other areas and influences. The historical origins of Latin America and the Caribbean are based on conquest, colonialism, migration, racial and ethnic diversity, and inequalities. Students will learn about these origins and how, from which distinct and dynamic cultures, political regimes, societies, and artistic forms of productions have developed to represent a shared as well as diverse regional landscape. Similarly, the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean are intricately connected through a shared history, political interventions, and economic goals. Combining courses from departments such as Anthropology, Geography, History, World Languages and Cultures, Political Science, Africana Studies, Religious Studies, Sociology, Cinema Studies, Africana Studies, as well as School of Art and School of Music, students will be able to develop a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the historical legacies and contemporary dynamics of the region and its connections to the US, Europe, and other countries and areas. Because of the intentionally broad character of this major, students should develop their own program that focuses on a particular language and/or country in the region. This may also include an area of study or approach.
