Students who are already in a Masters of Music program may also earn a graduate certificate in music theory pedagogy. This program will provide graduate students with the coursework and practical experience needed to teach high school or undergraduate music theory courses.

Admissions Standards/Procedures

• To be admitted to this program, students must
  • submit the online application and meet the Graduate Admission requirements for a certificate program
  • interview with the theory faculty, and
  • have passed the Graduate Theory Diagnostic test or MUTH 400.

• 3 credit hours of analysis taken from MUTH 520  or MUTH 521  
• 3 credit hours of technology taken from MUTC 520 , MUTC 530 , MUTC 540  or MUTC 550  
• 4 credit hours of pedagogy taken from MUTH 530  or MUTH 531  
• 3 credit hours of theory and technology electives taken from  MUTC 520 , MUTC 530 , MUTH 530  MUTH 531 , MUTH 551 ,
  MUTH 593
   , or MUTC 593  
• 2 credit hours of the final teaching project, MUTH 595  

Non-Course Requirements

To receive the certificate, students must:
1) complete the Graduate Certificate Course Verification Form (located on the Graduate School webpage under the Forms Central tab) and
2) through MyUTK, apply to graduate from the certificate program.
