Biomedical Engineering Major, PhD


Requirements

All students must complete a minimum of 72 graduate hours beyond the bachelor’s degree, exclusive of credits for the master’s thesis. These must include a minimum of 24 hours in Doctoral Research and Dissertation and a minimum of 36 credit hours of other graduate coursework.

For the PhD in biomedical engineering, the courses must include:

  • The biomedical engineering core curriculum comprising BME 503 , BME 511 , BME 521 , and BME 601 .
  • Completion of a Knowledge Breadth requirement (3 graduate hours) for the BME Specialization Track chosen by the student, as specified in the BME Graduate Student Handbook.
  • Completion of a Knowledge Depth requirement (3 – 6 graduate hours) for the BME Specialization Track chosen by the student, as specified in the BME Graduate Student Handbook.
  • A minimum of 18 graduate hours within the major.
  • A minimum of 6 hours of course work at the 600-level.

Additional requirements for the PhD in biomedical engineering are:

  • Participation in BME graduate seminars.
  • Successful completion of all required examinations, which include a qualifying exam and written and oral comprehensive exams.
  • Presentation of a dissertation proposal to the student’s advisory committee and approval of that proposal by that committee.
  • Successful defense of the dissertation.
     

Energy Science and Engineering Concentration


This concentration is offered in collaboration with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (CIRE). The CIRE is a joint effort between the College of Engineering, other University of Tennessee colleges, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The students who wish to pursue this concentration will normally have completed 6 Core credit hours, 3 credit hours of Knowledge Breadth, and 6 credit hours of Knowledge Specialization coursework (minimum 15 hours) specified under the Energy Science and Engineering major , (PhD) program section of this catalog.
