Economics (Arts and Sciences)

Major Requirements   Minor Requirements

The economics major provides an opportunity to apply the theoretical and analytical rigor of economic tools to social sciences. Students choose from a traditional option (27 hours in economics), or a concentration in Business Economics, Econometrics and Data Analysis or Economic Policy. The elective coursework covers topics including applied statistics, banking, environment, international, health, labor, quantitative economics, among others. The major coursework covers game theory, macroeconomic topics like the determinants of unemployment and inflation. Majors pursue careers in the traditional business disciplines, consulting, all levels of government service and policy advocacy, and a variety of other fields. The program provides excellent training for graduate work in economics, business, public policy, and law.

Courses offered in the Department of Economics, housed in the Haslam College of Business, provide an opportunity for a major or minor in economics in the College of Arts and Sciences.

In addition, certification to teach economics in secondary schools is available. Students with such interest should consult the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences as early in their program as possible to determine the appropriate requirements.
