CLAS 439 - Pompeii3 Credit Hours Study of Pompeii and adjacent archaeological sites buried during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE. A combination of textual, visual, and archaeological approaches will be used to examine how ancient inhabitants of the region of Campania lived and died. Topics include the modern discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, ancient urbanism, domestic and public space, politics, entertainment, slavery, villas and the life of luxury on the Bay of Naples, and finally the catastrophic moment of the cities’ destruction.
