Premodern Studies Graduate Certificate

The Marco Institute offers a graduate certificate enabling students with an interest in premodern topics to acquire a broad foundation in the interdisciplinary approaches to premodern research and to begin putting these approaches into practice. Prospective candidates for the certificate should be earning a Masters or doctoral degree in a related discipline at UTK. Additional information is available at the Marco Institute website.

Admissions Standards/Procedures


  • Students may take up to 6 graduate credit hours of certificate classes before making formal application to the Medieval Studies certificate.
  • Interested students should meet with the Associate Director to register for graduate certificate with a letter of application and plan for program completion.
  • Application to the certificate must be made to the Office of Graduate Admissions by submitting the online application and copies of undergraduate transcripts (and graduate transcripts, if applicable).

Academic Standards


  • Once admitted to the certificate, students must maintain a graduate GPA of at least 3.00.

Non-Course Requirements


  • All courses must be selected in consultation with either the Director of Associate Director, who must approve all courses for individual students prior to their being taken, except that, as noted above, up to 6 graduate credit hours may be accepted from candidates upon admission.
  • Demonstration of competency in medieval Latin or another approved an ancient or modern language necessary to the student’s program of study and research agenda. Comptenancy will be demonstrated through
    • Earning a B+ or higher in CLAS 435 and CLAS 571 or
    • Passing the Marco Medieval Latin Examination administered on campus
    • The chair of the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program, in conjunction with the Marco Graduate Curriculum Committee, will establish standards for determining competency in other languages.
  • Registered certificate students will submit an annual overview of Marco-related activities and progress towards certificate. During a meeting with the Associate Direcotr, students will set an individual programatic agenda for the following year.
  • Evidence of professionalization in Premodern Studies in the form of a formal, twenty-minute presentation of original research to take place on campus for Marco faculty, students, and the public. The presentation should demonstrate interdisciplinarity and may grow out of a course or seminar paper. Normally the presentation will take place in the semester that the certificate is granted.

To receive the certificate, students must:

1) complete the Graduate Certificate Course Verification Form (located on the Graduate School webpage under the Forms Central tab) and

2) through MyUTK, apply to graduate from the certificate program.
