Exercise and Sport Sciences Major, PhD


Exercise Science Concentration

Requirements

  • 15 hours in exercise science. 
  • 9 hours in an exercise science specialization: biomechanics/sports medicine, exercise physiology, physical activity and population health, or other area approved by committee. 
  • Three registrations in EXSC 601 
  • 6 hours in a cognate selected from outside the student’s major field. The cognate must be related to and supportive of the concentration and specialization. 
  • 15 hours in research methodologies or research experience. 
  • 24 dissertation hours.

NOTE: The above are viewed as minimum requirements and are subject to modification by the student’s committee.

Sport Studies Concentration

The PhD with a major in exercise and sport sciences offers a concentration in sport studies with areas of specialization in motor behavior, sport management, sport psychology, and sport sociology. The program stresses an interdisciplinary approach to course work and research and expects students to become proficient in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Students are expected to obtain a significant grounding in the allied, parent disciplines. The program prepares students to obtain faculty positions in higher education and/or jobs with applied educational, business, and sport enterprises. Students must have completed all requirements for a master’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, psychology, sociology, sport studies, business, or a related field prior to beginning the doctoral program. The program usually takes 3 years (2 years of course work and 1 year for the dissertation).
