Individualized Program

Existing Arts and Sciences majors will satisfy the needs of most students entering the university. Some, however, come with particular strengths in their preparation or with  special interests which do not coincide with traditional departmental or interdepartmental majors. For these students, the individualized program has been established as a means of attaining a closer correlation between student needs and academic programs.

Students in the individualized program will satisfy all the basic skills and distribution requirements. Individualization takes place in the area of concentration. The quantitative aspect of the area of concentration is the same as for most majors in the basic program (i.e., a minimum of 24 hours in courses numbered above 200), and at least two-thirds of the courses must be selected from disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences. The student may design a program in consultation with an advisor and submit it for consideration to the Committee on the Individualized Program. The proposed courses of study must have some clear central purpose, usually implemented through intensive work in two or three departments; an undirected scattering of courses will not be approved. Students must submit their proposals for review by the committee prior to the completion of 75 hours of course work. For further information contact Arts and Sciences Advising Services.
